ALONE A DROP...
TOGETHER AN OCEAN
#DoMore24 is here!
During a time when grant funding and other funding sources are dwindling, this opportunity means more than ever.
Our goal is to raise $13,000 for our seal triage program so that we can increase the amount of time that we can take care of seals at MERR.
This capability will enable us to provide lifesaving fluids, nutritional support, medications, and wound care, while conducting more in-depth diagnostics.
All of this will help the seal to stabilize and start to heal more solidly before heading out to a long-term rehab center, and will also buy precious time for these baby seals while they wait for limited rehab space to open up.
Currently, MERR can care for seals for 24 hours, but with your help we will be able to expand care to 96 hours, which can make a big difference in their recovery and survival. There are many ways that MERR volunteers can help us to reach our fundraising goal. Please feel free to share our campaign and posts with friends and family through email, social media, or through community newsletters. And if you would like to donate, the campaign gives extra funds to organizations that actively take part.
S'More Seals

photos and video by: Kevin Mohs
S’more Seals is a free weekly opportunity to learn all about our local seal colony:
Where do these seals come from? Where are they going? What’s it like working with them? And what does MERR do when they head out on a seal response? All these questions and more will be answered during our hour-long S’More Seal sessions around the firepit at Grain on the Rocks on Saturdays through the winter.
Grain on the Rocks will provide the backdrop as well as discounted prices on beverages and food ordered by those attending, including special S’mores-inspired hot chocolate. Grain will offer 15% orders from the restaurant, coffee shop or bar. MERR will provide visuals, artifacts, and discuss their role in the protection of these amazing marine mammals.
The S’more Seal sessions are scheduled immediately following the MERR Seal Tours aboard Cape Water Tours, but you don’t have to be a participant on the vessel to attend the sessions. Given the outdoor setting for the chats, they are subject to change based on weather. Any cancellations will be posted on our MERR’s Facebook page.
Bundle up the whole family, and get cozy by the fire with delicious food and beverages from Grain and learn all about our resident gray and harbor seal populations at S’more Seals sessions on Saturdays.
Here are the tentative dates and times for this season’s sessions, but please check our Facebook page for any cancellations:
If a member of the public encounters a seal resting on the beach or elsewhere, please call MERR immediately at 302.228.5029, and keep a distance of 150 feet. Seals will often spend about half their lives on land and rest is integral to their survival, regardless of its age, as females will often go for weeks without consuming food while they are nursing. Approaching them closely can frighten them and add stress, causing them to retreat into the water without the necessary rest.
