Baby Seal Caught in Party Balloon Ribbon

While on patrol at Pelican Point, Namibia, Naude from OCN noticed what he thought was a string around a young seal pups neck. Naude, Denzil and Antoine decided to try and catch him, with Naude running up front and Denzil and Antoine scanning the area for other potentially hurt animals. Naude grabbed the pup and managed to cut him free with only a small struggle. The "string" was actually shiny, colorful plastic, and came from a party balloon that must have been released or lost by someone from nearby Walvis Bay. Unfortunately thousands of marine animals are caught up, and often killed by this very thing every year. The shimmer of the string might make it look like a fish in the water, and end up around an animal's neck, beak, snout or flipper. Directly after the release they saw another young pup with a white plastic packaging strap around his chest. The strap was actaully cut before, which is a great practice, but someone had tied it into a loop again and it ended up in the worst place possible - Around an innocent animal's neck. Rubber Jellyfish shows the environmental impact of helium balloons - Daily Mail

Carly Wilson, based on the Gold Coast, (left and inset) was pregnant with her first child when she found herself researching gender reveal ideas - and becoming worried about the use of balloons. Because most people, even those conscious of the environment and the impact man-made waste has on marine life, believe balloons are biodegradable. Many of them are marketed that way. 'But that's a complete lie. The idea they are "safe" for the environment comes from one study completed in the 80s that's based on no scientific backing. It wasn't even peer reviewed,' she told FEMAIL. So instead of releasing balloons Carly chose to cut into a cake - which was a pink tint inside - and started a three-year long journey to release a documentary about the dangers of these rubber balls of air. 'Once they enter the atmosphere they burst into a shape that looks very similar to a jellyfish - so when they come back down to the ground, and ultimately end up in the water, sea turtles and other wildlife eat them believing they're squid.' What follows is the tragic loss of thousands of sea turtles (right), which by and large very rarely make it to adulthood anyway, all for the sake of a few seconds of brightly coloured enjoyment. Sea Turtle Rescued After Eating Balloon: Chex's Story

Chex is a green sea turtle that was rescued after eating a balloon in the ocean. This little sea turtle was found floating and struggling to dive. Make an ocean pledge in honor of Chex: https://www.seewinter.com/world-oceans-day-pledge/ Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags, balloons and other trash for jellyfish or squid. Once sea turtles start swallowing something they are unable to stop and may become sick like Chex or even die after ingesting marine debris. Fortunately, Chex was rescued, rehabilitated and released, but many other marine animals are not so lucky. Why Balloons and Ocean Plastic Are Bad for Sea Turtles

World Oceans Day is June 8, 2019. Together we can stop plastic pollution and protect our oceans! Clearwater Marine Aquarium has seen firsthand the impact that plastics and marine debris have on marine life. Chex was a juvenile sea turtle that, unfortunately, swallowed part of a plastic balloon. Luckily, he was rescued, rehabilitated and successfully released back into the ocean, but not all animals are as lucky. Learn from Chex's story, and help prevent plastic pollution in the ocean. Avoid using single-use plastics, and never release balloons into the air. Even trash and debris inland can end up in waterways and reach the ocean. Remember the 3 R's for conservation: REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. #WorldOceansDay #TogetherWeCan Visit us at Clearwater Marine Aquarium: http://bit.ly/1EKyytp Donate to Clearwater Marine Aquarium: https://visit.seewinter.com/#/Donation © 2019 Clearwater Marine Aquarium We believe in preserving our environment while inspiring the human spirit through leadership in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine life; environmental education; research; and conservation.
