Every year MERR hosts our biggest fundraising event in November, our Finraiser! Volunteers begin soliciting for donations many months in advance, receiving generous donations from businesses all over Sussex County. Our volunteers are crucial in the making of this magical night! Experienced and new volunteers help with every aspect, from soliciting to decorating to item distribution. This event would not be possible without our phenomenal volunteers, they truly bring this fundraiser to life!
The months of hard work all come together in the elegant event space at Salero, located on the top floor of the Henlopen Hotel overlooking the ocean. The evening begins with wine tasting and guests perusing the silent and live auction items and the Lucky Draw table. While the guests bid on silent auction items, they are served a delicious array of hors d’oeuvres followed by coffee and desserts. (Special thanks go out to the women of the Village Improvement Association for contributing trays of delectable desserts this year).
Once finding their seats in the dining area, the perfect spot to view the stunning sunset, our Director, Suzanne Thurman, presented a summary of the rescues and memorable events from this year. Live music from 33 1/3 filled the night with energetic music, inspiring guests and volunteers alike to kick up their “fins” on the dance floor! Towards the end of the night, the thrilling and fast-paced live auction began with long time MERR auctioneer, Frank McCraghan. Unique adventures and experiences were auctioned off during this time, like Bee Keeping, Seal Survey Team Excursions, and a Sailboat race. Even check-out was fun as guests sampled delicious chocolates and were entertained with an impromptu musical performance by Pittsburg professional musician Terence Vaughn.
